ALAN F. ANSHER, M.D.
Alan F. Ansher, M.D. is a native Washingtonian and has been practicing medicine in Alexandria for the past 30 years. During this time he has performed over 40,000 colonoscopies and upper endoscopies. He graduated Summa cum laude from The University of Maryland and was The Valedictorian Student Speaker at The May 1978 Commencement of The University of Maryland, College Park. He attended medical school at The University of Maryland School of Medicine where he graduated Magna cum laude and was 2nd in his medical school class. While at The University of Maryland School of Medicine he was awarded the Sandoz Award for Superior Academic Achievement and Contribution to Health Care. He did his Internal Medicine Residency and Gastroenterology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital. While there he published numerous papers in the medical literature on topics ranging from colonic polyps to pancreatitis. In 1987 he was honored by The American College of Gastroenterology for publishing The Paper of the Year.
He has been featured on The Channel 9 News and Washington Times as the first doctor in the Washington area to perform laser lithotripsy on a gallstone in the bile ducts of the liver. He was also featured on The CNN National News and Channels 4 and 9 local news regarding dietary measures to reduce the risk of colon cancer. He has been cited repeatedly as one of The Top Physicians in the Washington, DC area by Washingtonian Magazine and in Washington Consumers Checkbook as one of the Areas Outstanding Physician Specialists. He is board certified by The American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialties of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has served as The Chairman of The Nutrition Committee at Alexandria Hospital and is a former Chief of The Division of Gastroenterology at Alexandria Hospital.
